Communicating for Change
“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning” – Maya Angelou
A human brain is hardwired to catch onto any change in our environment and ignore anything repetitive. So, imagine how difficult it would be for an audience to listen to a monotonous speaker for any length of time. The steady tones become white noise, and as result they are tuned out. That’s why vocal variety is vital.
It is the life that you breathe into what you say and do onstage, and focuses on your level of expressiveness. There are various components that can affect your vocal variety including, volume, pitch, pace, pause, and emotions. It can be used to either build tension or add impact. Overall the benefits of vocal variety boil down to three points:
1) Makes you more interesting to listen to
2) Conveys your emotions to the listener
3) Magnifies the meaning and significance of your message.
